Average data scientist has sixpack (m.) or C-cup (f.) [SAS research]

The job of data scientist is often called a sexy profession. Research with data scientists all across Europe now scientifically confirms this assumption. It has become clear that data scientists incline stronger towards the traditional beauty standards than the average European.

We admit. This research didn’t really happen. But it sure was a great way to launch the World of Analytics blog on April 1st! And we're certain all analytics-lovers will agree: data science is hot!

The job of data scientist is often called a sexy profession. Research with data scientists all across Europe now scientifically confirms this assumption. The research project with 734 scientists (401 male and 333 female), commissioned by SAS Software, revealed some surprising results. Both the male and female data scientists scored remarkably higher in approaching the beauty standards currently in place than the average European.

Data scientists not only perform well when it comes to shape and size, they were also considered more sexy by an independent test audience. Researchers used pictures of a sample of the data scientists as well as pictures of some random other Europeans, and asked the audience a simple question: “Do you think this person is sexy?”. Almost 70% of the data scientists was labelled ‘sexy’ versus only 52% of the ‘regular’ Europeans.

“We have always believed that we have have a sexy job,” reacts Elena Pescado, president of the EDSA (European Data Scientist Association), “but we suspected that it was the love for our job that gave us such a sexy aura. What a great surprise to see our sex appeal proven scientifically! But, as we always say: the numbers never lie!”
